About three hours between two of inland China's biggest draws, on a line that spends much of the trip inside the Qinling range. It's one of the more scenic stretches of high-speed rail in the country, and it comfortably beats flying.

At about 3h12 centre to centre it's faster door-to-door than the short flight once you count the airports, the fare is a fraction of an airfare, and the mountain scenery is part of the trip. Fly only if it slots into a wider itinerary.

Should you take the train or fly?
Take the train. The fastest G-trains run Chengdu–Xi’an in about 3 hours 12 minutes, station to station in the centre of each city. A flight is a little over an hour in the air, but both airports are a long way out, so door to door you’re at four hours or more — and paying several times the rail fare.
Price barely registers. Second class is around ¥263. Business seat, if you want the room, is about ¥820 — still well under a flexible airfare.
The scenery is a real bonus. The middle third of the line burrows through the Qinling mountains, breaking out into river valleys between tunnels. It’s a genuinely pleasant three hours.
Stations, tickets and what to expect
Which stations. Most trains run Chengdu East (Chengdudong) to Xi’an North (Xi’anbei). A few use Xi’an’s central station instead — check your ticket. Xi’an North is on metro line 2, roughly half an hour from the Bell Tower and the city walls.
How to book. Trip.com or the 12306 app, passport as the ID type. Electronic ticket — scan your passport at the gate.
Seat classes. Second class is fine for three hours. First class buys more legroom; business is the near-flat premium option.

Not directly — the Army is east of Xi'an, off this line. Do it as a half-day trip from Xi'an itself.
