The 2018 line turned a six-hour slog into ninety minutes for about ¥109. The one thing to get right: Huangshan North station sits in Tunxi town, and the mountain (Tangkou) is roughly an hour further by bus. Build that hour into your day.
Should you take the train or fly?
Take the train. Before the line opened in 2018 this was a six-hour bus or slow train; now it’s about 1h15 on the fastest G-services and rarely more than two hours, for roughly ¥109 second class. Around 31 trains run each way per day.
Flying isn’t worth it — Tunxi’s airport is small and the train is faster door-to-door from Hangzhou over this distance.
Stations, tickets and what to expect
The station is not the mountain. Trains run Hangzhou East (Hangzhoudong) to Huangshan North (Huangshanbei). Huangshan North is in Tunxi, the modern town also called “Huangshan City”. The mountain’s main entrance at Tangkou is roughly 60–70 km on, about an hour by bus. Direct buses leave from outside Huangshan North for the scenic area — budget that hour into both ends of your day, and don’t book a late train back expecting to still be on the summit at 17:00.
Worth stopping for around the station. Tunxi Old Street is a short ride away, and the UNESCO water villages of Hongcun and Xidi are 30–45 minutes out. A common plan is the mountain plus a night in Hongcun.
